Private Credit Update: Key Takeaways from the Q2 2026 CDLI Webinar
The latest CDLI data provides a useful look at how U.S. middle-market direct lending is navigating a more selective credit environment.
The CDLI returned 1.89% in Q2 2026 and 7.71% over the trailing four quarters. Interest income remained the primary return driver, contributing 2.33% for the quarter and 9.92% over the trailing four quarters.
The index includes nearly 23,000 directly originated middle-market loans totaling approximately $553 billion, up from $287 billion three years ago.
A few key takeaways:
1. Income remains the foundation of returns
As of June 30, the CDLI’s Q2 interest income was 2.33% which helps explain the continued interest in private credit.
2. Credit conditions are mixed, but realized losses remain relatively low
Realized losses as of June 30 were -0.13% for the quarter and -0.47% over the trailing four quarters.
Non-accruals declined from 1.85% to 1.73% during Q2. Payment-in-kind income also declined to 6.92% of total income, its lowest level since the pandemic period.
3. Manager selection is becoming more important
The webinar highlighted growing differences among lenders. Borrower selection, technology exposure, portfolio concentration, underwriting discipline, and loans originated at higher valuations are contributing to greater variation in results.
Private credit is not a uniform asset class. Loan structure, diversification, valuation practices, and workout capabilities can materially affect outcomes.
4. Technology remains an area to monitor
Technology represents approximately 24% of the CDLI, making it the index’s largest industry exposure. Slower growth, artificial intelligence-related disruption, refinancing needs, and borrower-specific fundamentals remain important considerations.
5. Capital formation is strong, but deal activity has lagged
Nearly $100 billion was raised across private credit strategies during the first half of 2026, with more than 60% directed toward direct lending. At the same time, lending activity slowed amid limited merger and acquisition volume and valuation gaps between buyers and sellers.
The takeaway: Private credit continues to provide meaningful income potential, but investors should look beyond headline yields. Underwriting quality, loan seniority, portfolio construction, liquidity, fees, leverage, and manager experience all deserve careful evaluation.
