The AI build out has one setting, and it is not "slow down."
Many might wonder why markets have remained so resilient in the face of so much geopolitical uncertainty. One of the obvious reasons is the AI build out happening at unprecedented size and speed.
AI capital spending keeps surprising to the upside. Not long ago, in January 2026, the major hyperscalers were expected to invest $533 billion in 2026. The latest estimates now point to $769 billion, and forecasts for the years ahead have moved higher across the board, 2027 rose from $605 billion to $925 billion. When the AI capex outlook keeps climbing rather than leveling off, it tells you something about how early we may still be in this cycle.
What I find most interesting is how many ways there are to play the AI theme. AI is not just one trade. The value chain runs from semiconductor chips and the companies that design and produce them, to the data centers that house the compute, to the power generation and transmission needed to run it all. Around those pillars sit construction and real estate, cooling and electrical equipment, model builders, and the enterprises putting these tools to work. Each layer carries its own risks and opportunities, and each can play a very different role in a portfolio.
That range of angles is exactly why this deserves a thoughtful conversation rather than a headline reaction. Chips, power, and data centers are the pillars of AI, and they are also the constraints on how fast it can grow.
